Effects of AI on productivity and work quality

Let's start from some considerations contained in a working paper published by the Harvard Business School, entitled "Navigating the Jagged Technological Frontier: Field Experimental Evidence of the Effects of AI on Knowledge Worker Productivity and Quality".

The paper presents a series of experiments and tasks designed to assess the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in supporting professional activities. The experiments are divided into two categories: "Inside the Frontier" and "Outside the Frontier".

In the "Inside the Frontier" task, participants work for a beverage or footwear company and have to present an idea for a new product. They must generate ideas, choose the best one, describe a potential prototype, list the steps needed to launch the product and propose a name for the product. They must also segment the market, decide which segment is the most important, propose a marketing slogan for each of the target segments, suggest ways to test whether the marketing slogan works well with the identified customers and write a memo to their boss explaining their findings.

In the "Outside the Frontier" task, participants must analyse the performance of a company's distribution channels and its brands, using financial data and interviews with insiders. They must then provide recommendations to the CEO on which channel or brand should be the focus for the company's growth.

The paper concludes with a discussion of the results of the experiments, highlighting the effectiveness of AI in improving the quality and productivity of participants' responses.

You can read this paper by visiting the Harvard website: this page provides a summary and lets you download or consult the PDF of the article.

Let's look at some data that emerged from the study:

The paper suggests that the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) can lead to significant productivity benefits, especially for tasks that fall within its "frontier of capabilities". AI was shown to increase the speed of task execution by 25%, human-rated performance by 40% and task completion by 12%.

Quoting the paper: "Not only did the use of AI lead to an increase in the number of subtasks completed by an average of 12.5%, but it also enhanced the quality of the responses by an average of more than 40%." (In Italian: "Non solo l'uso dell'IA ha portato a un aumento del numero di sottotask completati in media del 12,5%, ma ha anche migliorato la qualità delle risposte in media di oltre il 40%.")

So, if AI is used appropriately and for tasks suited to its capabilities, it can be significantly beneficial.

We at Open Gate strongly believe in the potential of GenAI, so much so that we have developed Tools that harness its immense potential: AIDeskPro and mAIbuddy.

Please note: All the summaries, quotations... were produced by submitting the Harvard paper to AIDeskPro and asking it the following questions:

  • Can you summarise the "Introduction" in Italian?
  • According to this paper, is it better to use Gen AI or better not to?
  • Extract the most significant sentence in favour of Gen AI and quote it to me verbatim in English
  • Can you translate this last sentence into Italian?
