Shadow AI: the AI risk threatening your Company!
Around the varied world of Artificial Intelligence, new buzzwords, catchphrases and collective enthusiasms/worries keep popping up. The buzzword of the moment is "Shadow AI"... but what exactly is it?
Literally, it is the unauthorized use of Artificial Intelligence by the Employees of a Company. The term "Shadow AI" derives from another similar term that preceded it, namely "Shadow IT" (IT systems other than those centrally authorized by a company, used by departments or employees in defiance of the restrictions imposed at company level).
That is the definition, but should we really worry about it?
Let's put it this way: even without giving it a first and last name, we sensed the existence of this danger linked to the indiscriminate use of AI... now we also know what to call it. The most important thing to do now is not to stop at the definition, but to reflect on how far Shadow AI has already entered our companies and which countermeasures to adopt. Imagine an employee who uploads a document containing confidential market strategies, sensitive financial data or customers' personal information to an external generative AI tool, in order to summarize or improve it. These scenarios are not science fiction, but the harsh reality of common practice, which exposes your company to very serious risks:

Let's think about it for a moment: if your employees can get a job done in half an hour instead of two hours, thanks to an AI tool, do you think they won't use it? Of course they will! And it is right that they want to be efficient, because the hours saved will be hours devoted to other activities, with benefits for the company too.
This phenomenon, although driven by good intentions of efficiency, can, however, quickly turn into a nightmare for security and compliance.
