Why choose the Cloud?

Why choose the Cloud?

We are an IT company… and we don't even have a server in the office, how is that possible?
It's very simple: we are enthusiastic users of the Cloud.
Over the years we have also become Partners of two of the main global players in the cloud field: Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Why choose the cloud?

At home, how do you get your electricity?
Do you have your own generator or do you use the distribution grid?
Obviously you are connected to the power grid, because a stand-alone generator can never compete in terms of cost per kilowatt: just think of the time you would have to devote to maintenance, not to mention the investment for purchase and repairs.

And what if it were to become insufficient because you decided to add an air conditioner? You would have to buy a more powerful one, no way around it, even though in reality you only need that extra margin of power in summer, for a very short period of the year.

OK, now keep all these things in mind and answer the next question: where do you want your business software to live? On a physical server (which you have to buy, maintain, power, cool, which can break down, which will become old and insufficient…) or on a cloud server that you will never have to worry about?
Well… if you have your own power generator at home… I guess you answered physical server to this second question!

Is data safe on the cloud?

Certainly safer than on a physical server in your office, which could break down or be breached.

Simply ask yourself the following question:
Are the resources (both financial and in terms of manpower) that I can invest to guarantee the security of my data... even remotely comparable to those that Google or Amazon can invest?

If, on the other hand, your security concern is more about third parties being able to see your data, I'm afraid it is much easier to breach your physical server. The infrastructures of the main providers guarantee secure delivery of services, secure storage (secure also in terms of Privacy), secure communications (between services and between customers of the service) and secure management by administrators.

Shall we talk about backups?
When you decide to go down the physical server route, you always have to plan on dedicating a server to backups, precisely to prevent a failure from meaning the total loss of your data.
So double the purchase cost, the maintenance, the energy to power it, the risk of breakdown…

Let's also talk about costs

First of all, to buy a physical server its full cost must necessarily be paid out from day zero. A cloud server is paid for on a consumption basis, like your electricity bill.
There is also another aspect to consider when talking about costs: how do you size the physical server you are going to buy?

Let me give you an example: I offer a service normally used by about a thousand users a day, but, on the 10th of every month, all my users need to log in and download some documentation… and from an average of 1,000 users I jump to 50,000 users. Question: which physical server will I have to buy? One capable of handling 1,000 users or 50,000? Obviously 50,000, otherwise my service will crash on the 10th of every month!

money

So essentially I will spend a large sum just for one day a month!

After seeing how much that server costs you would be very tempted to scrap the service offered, but that service sets you apart from the competition… so you spend the crazy sum, you have no choice.

If instead you decide to look at the cloud, then the problem does not exist!

Because the cloud is elastic, mouldable, it can support your peaks.

On the 10th of the month you will spend a bit more on cloud services, very true, but only on the 10th of the month.

SO LET'S RECAP:

  • It costs less
  • You don't have to pay everything up front
  • It is more secure
  • If it breaks you won't even notice
  • It requires no maintenance on your part
  • It consumes no energy
  • It takes up no space in the office

Are you really convinced you still want to carry on with your power generator?
